With China and Brazil striving for the West\u2019s living standards and looking to our best green building standards \u2013 worldwide carbon emissions are set to rise dramatically! From their current low energy use per person, it doesn\u2019t take much back-of-envelope calcs to show more than 4\u00baC of climate change. Taking 30% off our energy use does not cut it when you are already emitting three planet worth.<\/p>\n

They are looking for West leadership. Instead we hide behind sustainability as cost-plus little steps with historic institutional barriers. But we could unlock all this if we are prepared to take on Smart Design:<\/p>\n

  1. Smart IT<\/strong> \u2013 Designing for tablet computers instead of PCs slashes both IT and its cooling energy.<\/li>\n
  2. LED task lighting<\/strong> \u2013 More than halves light energy use and its cooling energy.<\/li>\n
  3. \n
    Daylight <\/strong>\u2013 Designed for quality rather than quantity brings new light to window design.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  4. \n
    Adaptive comfort <\/strong>\u2013 Improved productivity & energy by giving people control of their room conditions.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  5. \n
    Simple facades <\/strong>\u2013 Reverse the trend towards complex and expensive facades.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  6. \n
    Passive cooling<\/strong> \u2013 Reduced IT and solar allows thermal mass to provide most of the cooling.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  7. \n
    Small M&E<\/strong> \u2013 Greatly less demands means smaller, simpler and economical.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  8. \n
    Less material<\/strong> \u2013 Less M&E allows more net-lettable, no dropped ceilings, less storey height & cladding.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    On-site or local renewables<\/strong> \u2013 Greatly less energy needs so easier for FIT\/RHI to meet needs.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Integrated design<\/strong> \u2013 Essential \u2013 instead of using a pick-and-mix of green add-on\u2019s.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
